Use Magic Metallics
Magic Metallics are not a faux finish. You are creating a r=
eal
metal finish. Metallic finishes are not paint, but a coating that has actual
ground metal particles suspended in an acrylic sealing compound. The metal
particles adhere to the surface and cause that surface to look as if it is
actually made of metal.
Basecoat the shovel with 903 Smoke. Apply Mayco MM-106 Steel Metallic and MM-305 Rapid rust:

To
obtain a rusted look, pat on two to three coats of MM-106 Steel Metallic,
allowing to dry between coats. While the last co=
at is
still wet, apply MM-305 Rapid Rust to the area to be rusted.
Allow
to dry thoroughly and apply one to two coats of any Magic Metallic Sealer to
seal the piece.
Until
the piece has been thoroughly sealed, the piece will continue to oxidize. A=
llow
each coat of sealer to dry completely before applying the next coat.=
Af=
ter
the magic metallic sealer has dried completely, paint f=
lowers
or letters of choice using opaque stains. Dispense adhesive into shovel han=
dle
and place shovel on 1” dowel rod.
